The Teddy Bear was invented in Theodore Roosevelt's time as 'Teddy's Bear.' This was about a hundred years ago. The teddy bear was born during a period of extermination. Jon Mooallem talking about the schizophrenic relationships we have with animals. Teddy Bear invented during a time of urbanization. Generate empathy while at the same time contributing to the removal of habitats. Surround our children with stuffed animals while at the same time removing the children from a connection to a nature. By 1909 the toy industry was on the hunt for the next big thing. They created the Billy Possum in honour of the new President Taft. The toy failed. Possums are hideous he said. In contrast, bears are in an ambivalent space of aggression and love. "Nature cannot stand on its own anymore."
